The picturesque town of Areopolis, which is built at the foot of mount Saint Elias in the heart of Mani, Lakonia, is a traditional settlement, one of the most beautiful in Greece. The city is located at an altitude of 250 meters and at a distance of 72 km from Sparta.
Before 1836, the old name of the area was Τσίμοβα, before renamed in Areopoli. A possible explanation for the origin of the name is the inspiration of the god of war, Ares, from the old Mani, or a name which came from the tower of the winds that hit the area.
The view to the west of the Messinian gulf from Areopolis is impressive.
The center of Areopolis has been declared as a preserved village, and impressed with the architecture, and the specific nature of mani's landscape.
